Cabinas El Quetzal Lodge Monirul Hoque, August 3, 2014 Named after the famous and equally spectacular Quetzal birds that are found in the area, Cabinas El Quetzal Lodge is a quiet place, found in San Gerardo de Dota, which is ideal for nature lovers and bird watchers. Located on the banks of the Savegre River with the breathtaking landscape being provided by the Talamanca Mountain Ranges, this lodge is a small family run place. It should not be mistaken for a mountain hotel and it does not pretend to be one. It is simply four mountain lodges that are rustic and elegant and supply a journey back to the simple way of life. Location Although it is approximately ninety (90) kilometers away from San Jose, Costa Rica, there are easy ways to get to the lodge. One way is to drive to the area. Directions are provided by the Lodge once a reservation is made. If the visitor does not intend to drive then a bus can be taken to get to part of the distance. Buses run on an hourly schedule from San Jose to San Isidro de Pérez Zeledón and vice versa and visitors to the Lodge can arrange to be met at Kilometer 80, which is on the way. Cabins Once there, the visitor is treated to a rustic cabin that has tiled floors, small sitting areas and a terrace that opens up to the view of the tranquil riverside. There is hot water for showering, a kitchen area where guests can prepare their own meals and plenty of space, plus a playground for children to play. Important to note is the provision of plenty of blankets and heat for those nights that can turn out to be quite chilly, at that altitude. In concession to modernity, there is a private parking space and wireless Internet services. Also, while there is no cable network provision, guests can use the television and supplied connections to get connected with the devices that they bring with them. Attractions The attractions that are open to visitors to the mountain lodge include sport fishing, especially for trout, which can then be cooked in the kitchen provided. There is also trekking, hiking, horseback riding and bird watching. Bird watching is particularly interesting as there are well over one hundred and sixty (160) different species of birds to see in the region separate from the quetzal birds that are indigenous there. There are also tours that are available. A visit to the Los Quetzales National Park is in order as well as the infamous farms of coffee, peaces and apples that can be found in San Gerardo de Dota. The coffee tour finishes up with a taste test as part of the attraction for visitors to test the rich, world re-known coffee samples. A visit to Cabina El Quezal Lodge would not be complete without visiting the breath taking waterfalls that are a part of the Savegre River or taking a hike through the cloud forests. Make sure to partake of at least one of Mirians meals.
