The Central Valley is Costa Rica’s cool, green heartland around San José, ringed by volcanoes and coffee farms. Its eco lodges are mostly in the surrounding highlands: coffee plantation inns near Heredia, cloud forest hideaways at Bajos del Toro and San Gerardo de Dota, and river lodges around Turrialba. It’s a convenient first or last stop, close to the main airport.
